There’s no shortage of cooperages lining up to sell you barrels so why would you partner with us?
We founded Barrel Co to create a cooperage model built for New Zealand — one that combines the heritage of French oak craftsmanship with innovation, sustainability, and genuine partnership.
Our aim is to be as transparent as possible in the way we do business. We want to be judged by the quality of our barrels, our fair pricing and level of service. Our pricing reflects our longer-term aspirations around manufacturing French oak wine barrels in New Zealand to reduce costs by significantly reducing freight costs and removing sales agent costs.
Putting cost aside we believe that significant gains can be made for winemakers through reducing order lead times allowing orders to better match quality harvest information, improving sustainability through reduced CO2 emissions as well as reducing supply chain risk.
Fair Pricing
By manufacturing here in New Zealand, we strip out a big chunk of international freight cost and avoid paying commissions to local sales agents, so more of your spend goes into the barrel rather than the cost of Euro denominated overheads.
Reducing Risk
You can confirm orders later, when you have a clearer read on your harvest, while also shrinking your carbon footprint and avoiding the joys of container roulette and shipping delays.
Common questions, answered.
-
Written orders are required by 30 September 2026.
-
Our prices are the sum of our costs from our cooper in France plus the cost of delivering barrels from the cooperage to our warehouse in Hastings plus a fair margin to cover our actual costs. Our pricing is GST exclusive and does not include for local delivery from our Hastings warehouse to you. You can find indicative local delivery costs here in the Price List.
-
We will carry the risk of increased freight costs due to increases in the cost of fuel oil for customers who have confirmed their orders in writing.
However, there is always the potential for the cost of fuel oil to increase at any time. If it does then we may have to apply a surcharge on top of our prices to recover the cost increase. If this is the case, any surcharge will only apply to new orders made after the date the surcharge was implemented. The surcharge will not apply to orders confirmed prior to the date any surcharge was implemented.
In terms of sea freight timelines, there is always the risk of Middle East shipping lanes being closed to traffic. On top of this, there is also the potential for another early harvest here in New Zealand. Recognising these risks, we believe that it is prudent to close off orders earlier this year, on 30 September.

Indicative per pallet delivery costs to various regions are shown on the Price List. Please note that these costs are subject to movements (in both directions) in Fuel Adjustment Factors charged by our delivery contractor. We will only charge you what we are charged to deliver your barrels to you.
-
At present the Auckland indicative delivery charge is to our delivery contractors’ hub in Wiri, Auckland. However, we can arrange for delivery from Wiri to you at your cost.
-
We are not able to provide a price for delivery to Waiheke currently as pricing appears to vary depending on the available service. However, we are happy to get pricing for you to consider, closer to the time.
-
Yes, but we need to have written cancellation or amendment from you no later than 14 October 2026. After that date orders cannot ordinarily be cancelled or amended by you. If there is a problem, we are happy to collaborate with you to try and fix it.
-
Not necessarily, but we may ask for a deposit in the case of a large order or where the order is for custom barrels (for example where barrels have your logo lasered onto the barrel head or painted hoops).
-
Normally we invoice in NZD, where conversion from Euro to NZD will be at the same rate that we converted NZD to Euro at to pay our cooper. If you want to pay in Euro, then please advise us in writing at the time of order.
-
